India is among the countries most severely affected by climate change. According to reports, 600 million people in India suffer from acute water scarcity. Dwindling and partly contaminated water supplies, a strong dependence on rainfall, and the lack of alternative irrigation systems are central problems for rural areas, where about 70 percent of the Indian population lives. Consequently, water security is a top priority in the changing climate scenario.
Given this context, the Wilo-Foundation provided support to the "Water Quality Centre of Excellence" at Vishwakarma University, situated in Pune, a city in the southwestern Indian state of Maharashtra. The "Water Quality Centre of Excellence" focuses on researching different technologies for water purification, aiming to enhance water quality for people across India.
