South Korea: exchange for water experts

The Wilo-Foundation supported the exchange programme “Integrated Water Resources Management Experts Program in the Asia-Pacific Region”.

As the largest and most populous continent on Earth, Asia faces a particular challenge: its population has the lowest per-capita access to fresh water worldwide. Due to climate change and the worsening global water situation, water scarcity in Asia is increasingly moving into the focus of international attention.

Against this background, the Wilo-Foundation supported the exchange programme “Integrated Water Resources Management Experts Program in the Asia-Pacific Region” (IWRM). The programme was conducted for the second time in 2016 by the Korea Water Forum (KWF), Seoul, in cooperation with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), Gyeongbuk Province, the city of Andong and Andong National University.

The aim was to build on the successful World Water Forum (2015) in South Korea’s “water city” Andong and to foster exchange through a conference involving experts from academia, the water industry and politics from across the Asia-Pacific region. In addition, on the basis of the workshop, ongoing network meetings and further workshops were organised to continuously strengthen cooperation and the development of innovative solutions. A varied programme of excursions and cultural activities, offered by the city of Andong, rounded off the event.

Our funding partner

The Korea Water Forum (KWF), Seoul, is a non-profit organisation founded in 2006 by former Prime Minister Dr Han Seung-soo. Its aim is to develop a platform for stakeholders in the global water sector and to promote in-depth discussions on the global challenges of water management, in order to find answers to international water management issues and raise awareness of the importance of water management among policymakers and the public.

To achieve these goals, the KWF supports various research projects and initiates local and global forums, workshops and symposia to foster national and international exchange and networking. Its flagship projects include: the World Water Council, the World Water Forum, Water Education Programs and the Asia-Pacific Water Forum.
