KIT – Hydraulic engineering field excursions

To strengthen the connection between theory and practice in the education of future hydraulic engineering specialists, the Wilo-Foundation supported the hydraulic engineering field excursions of the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology.

Every two years, the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) organises a hydraulic engineering excursion, offering Master’s students the opportunity to complement their theoretical and academic studies with practical insights into the work of a hydraulic engineer.

In 2015, the Wilo-Foundation funded the participation of three international students in the programme for the first time, which took place in the Southern Black Forest region and Switzerland. The programme included, among other things, a visit to ETH Zurich. Participants also explored models of energy generation using reservoirs and hydroelectric power plants in comparison with natural water systems.

In 2023, financial support from the Wilo-Foundation enabled twelve students from the Bachelor’s and Master’s programmes in Civil Engineering and Water Science and Engineering to participate in the Whitsun field excursion to the Black Forest.The excursion, led by the Institute for Water and River Basin Management (IWG) and the Institute of Hydromechanics (IfH) at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, comprised a total of seven programme elements focusing on hydraulic engineering. Flood protection, a key aspect of water management in Baden-Württemberg, also played an important role. One of the destinations was the Wolterdingen flood retention basin.

To provide students with the opportunity to complement their theoretical and academic studies with practical insights into the work of a hydraulic engineer, the Wilo-Foundation supported these excursions.
