Well rehabilitations in Ghana

In the Brong-Ahafo region, defective and clogged water wells are being rehabilitated to increase their yield and sustainably improve the water supply.

The existing drinking water wells in the Brong-Ahafo region of Ghana are frequently only partially operational or entirely out of service due to issues such as poor water quality, faulty pumps or insufficient water yield. Additionally, the wells are often affected by blockages resulting from lime deposits as well as iron and manganese oxides.

In order to enhance the drinking water supply, the University of Bayreuth’s regional chapter of the German association "Engineers Without Borders" (German: Technik ohne Grenzen e.V.) is collaborating with students from Sunyani Technical University on a well rehabilitation project which is supported by the Wilo-Foundation. Since 2016, drinking water wells identified through data collection and analysis have been rehabilitated and their yield has been increased. With the help of the eco-friendly chemical Wessoclean, blockages in the wells were dissolved and their pumping performance enhanced.

Over the past years, access to water has been successfully restored in 12 communities across the Bono and Ashanti regions. The project originally aimed at repairing and rehabilitate six boreholes, but due to high demand from surrounding communities, the scope has since expanded to 16 boreholes. Many of these boreholes had been non-functional for many years, making the repairs complex and challenging. Thanks to the implemented measures, the performance of the wells has significantly improved, allowing villagers to draw a much larger quantity of drinking water.
