Ethiopia, situated in the Horn of Africa, is nearly three times the size of Germany and is the continent’s second most populous country after Nigeria. Nearly half of Ethiopia’s over 120 million inhabitants live below the poverty line. The small town of Finote Selam is located about 380 km north of Addis Ababa on the way to Bahir Dar. The urban water system of Finote Selam can only supply drinking water to about 66 percent of its more than 25,000 residents. The families most affected by water scarcity are the poorer ones living on the outskirts of the city and in the surrounding rural areas. To improve the situation, Habitat for Humanity e.V., Cologne (Germany), with financial support from the Wilo-Foundation, established water distribution points at two locations near Finote Selam.

The project “Water for Shembekuma and Bakel” included the installation of a total of eight water distribution points, the development of a drinking water source, the construction of two water reservoirs, a pumping station, and the installation of more than 8,000 meters of water pipelines. These measures directly benefit more than 2,800 people.
