Expansion of school sanitation facilities in Kenya

The installation of school sanitation facilities in eastern Kenya aimed to address the lack of access to safe sanitation and to improve hygienic and sanitary conditions at schools.

Over a period of two years, the Wilo-Foundation supported the construction of safe, hygienic sanitation facilities at schools near Lake Victoria—most recently in the Nyanza region and previously in Kisumu, in eastern Kenya.

In cooperation with the Weltgruppe Aplerbeck of the Evangelical Georgs parish in Dortmund, the project was implemented together with the Kenyan Geno Community Development Initiative and local partners. As part of this model project, two toilet facilities were constructed for the Roman Catholic Ragen Primary School and St. Charles Lwanga Ndori Secondary School in the province of Nyanza.

The installation of modern school toilets marked an important step toward improving sanitary conditions at both schools and across the wider province. Female students, in particular, benefit from the new, separate girls’ toilets, which enable them to participate fully in lessons during menstruation. In the long term, the improved sanitation facilities help to curb the spread of serious diseases that were previously exacerbated by open defecation. Upon completion, the facilities provide students and teaching staff with a reliable foundation for a safe and well-structured school environment.

Our funding partner

The Weltgruppe Aplerbeck der Ev. Georgs Kirchengemeinde, Dortmund has been maintaining and shaping the partnership with the Geno Community Development Initiative (GCDI) on behalf of the parish since 1995. The projects are initiated by the Dortmund-based Weltgruppe Aplerbeck and implemented locally by the Kenyan non-governmental organization GCDI with financial support from the Wilo-Foundation. In 2021, the Weltgruppe Aplerbeck was awarded the Sustainability Seal of the City of Dortmund.
