Taking responsibility further: The Wilo-Foundation sharpens its funding strategy

With a further developed funding strategy, the Wilo-Foundation is strengthening its profile as an internationally engaged family foundation. At the heart of this strategic evolution are the three impact areas Creating, Caring and Connecting, alongside an even stronger focus on digital transformation, artificial intelligence and societal future challenges.

The Wilo-Foundation is further developing its funding strategy and thereby sending a clear signal for modern, impact-oriented philanthropy.

Since its establishment in 2011, the foundation has been engaged in the fields of science, education & social affairs, culture and sports. Building on this proven foundation, the strategic direction has now been sharpened and more closely aligned with key societal future challenges.

Three impact areas as a strategic framework

Going forward, the three impact areas – Creating, Caring and Connecting – will provide the strategic framework for the foundation’s funding portfolio. “In doing so, the Wilo-Foundation translates the strategy of the Wilo Group into an independent philanthropic perspective with a clear societal focus”, explains David Höltgen, Board Member for Social Engagement at the Wilo-Foundation.

The new impact framework is already reflected in practice: all Wilo-Foundation projects have been mapped to one of the three impact areas and can be explored through a dedicated filter on the foundation’s website (here).

While “Creating” supports young people in developing future skills and navigating a digital world responsibly, “Caring” focuses on safeguarding livelihoods — particularly in the context of water, food security and climate resilience. “Connecting,” in turn, promotes exchange, cultural inspiration and societal dialogue around future-oriented topics and emerging technologies.

Stronger focus on digital transformation and AI

A particular emphasis is placed on the impact of digital transformation and artificial intelligence. The Wilo-Foundation increasingly sees technological developments as key enablers for sustainable development and societal innovation.

“The Wilo-Foundation is a family foundation with a strong values-based identity and a close connection to the entrepreneurial DNA of the Wilo Group. Building on this connection, we want to harness the opportunities of digital transformation and artificial intelligence for societal development and integrate future-oriented topics even more strongly into our funding activities – always with the goal of creating tangible societal impact,” notes David Höltgen.

Future-oriented topics with societal relevance

In terms of content, the foundation’s funding activities focus in particular on water, sustainable cities and regions, climate protection, food security, future skills and (social) entrepreneurship.

The foundation will continue to operate both locally and internationally: projects are funded worldwide — especially in regions where the Wilo Group is represented. At the same time, the foundation continues to take responsibility at its home base in Dortmund and throughout the Ruhr region.

The international framework guiding the foundation’s activities is the United Nations 2030 Agenda and its 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
