World Water Day 2026: Young WASH enterprises strengthen water and sanitation services in Peru and Colombia

Wilo-Foundation supports project to promote youth-led social WASH enterprises.

World Water Day 2026 highlights the link between water and gender equality. Under the guiding theme “Where water flows, equality grows,” the international initiative draws attention to existing inequalities in access to water. Where access to safe drinking water, sanitation, and hygiene is lacking, women and girls are disproportionately affected—through health risks, longer distances to collect water, and limited educational and economic opportunities.

World Water Day, held annually on 22 March, is an international day of action designated by the United Nations. It focuses attention on the vital importance of water as a life‑sustaining resource and calls for its sustainable and equitable management.

Young people shape sustainable WASH solutions

In Colombia and Peru, the organization Young Water Solutions supports young entrepreneurs in improving access to water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) through innovative business models.

The Wilo-Foundation provides financial support for the current project implemented by Young Water Solutions in both countries, thereby contributing to the targeted consolidation and further development of youth-led social WASH enterprises. As part of a two-year program, 25 high-impact WASH enterprises are supported, and a community of practice is established that brings together entrepreneurship, technical expertise, and access to finance.

The aim of the program is to improve the living conditions of around 98,000 people, create new economic opportunities for at least 200 young people in the WASH sector, and promote the international exchange of innovative solutions developed by young entrepreneurs beyond Latin America

Contributing to gender equality in the water sector

The approach taken by Young Water Solutions directly aligns with this year’s World Water Day focus on “Water and Gender Equality”. Reliable access to water, sanitation, and hygiene services is a key prerequisite for greater equality, as women and girls are disproportionately affected in areas where WASH services are lacking.

By strengthening innovative WASH enterprises and building sustainable service structures, the project contributes to lasting improvements in the living conditions of women and girls. Improved access to water and sanitation not only enhances health and safety, but also frees up time for education, employment, and social participation. At the same time, the program promotes the active involvement of young women and men in developing sustainable solutions in the water sector.
