The START-scholarship for newly immigrated pupils

As part of the START Foundation’s school scholarship programme, ten pupils from immigrant backgrounds (in North Rhine-Westphalia (Dortmund) and Saxony-Anhalt) are being supported and accompanied on their education journey. The scholarship holders are pupils who show outstanding commitment and motivation to perform and have been living in Germany for a relatively short time only (five years as a maximum). The programme thus also extends to young refugees. The scholarship includes a monthly education allowance (e.g. for learning materials or language courses), an education programme and individual support until graduation from school. Through its involvement, the Wilo-Foundation wants to support the integration of young new immigrants. One key aspect of the programme is that an inspiring and interesting learning environment is created for young scholarship holders.

Over the past 11 years, more than 1,700 scholarship holders have been supported by START.
The Wilo-Stiftung and Wilo-Foundation attach great importance to the support of START scholarship holders since motivated young people are offered very concrete and hands-on education opportunities and an interesting learning environment as part of the programme. The aim is to promote open-mindedness and tolerance of students and to encourage them to broaden their perspective. The scholarship includes a monthly education allowance, an education programme and individual support until graduation from school.

Our funding partners:

START gGmbH was founded in 2002 as a project run by the charitable Hertie Foundation. The idea is that personal commitment, talent and motivation should be supported irrespective of background, status or surroundings for the enrichment of society as a whole. The START scholarship programme supports committed youngsters with a migration background in their efforts to gain a good secondary school-leaving qualification, while fostering their social commitment and thus giving them more opportunity to participate in society.
