STEMtastic Summer Camp (USA)
One of the funding priorities of the Wilo-Foundation in the area of science and education is to awaken young people’s interest in and passion for natural sciences, particularly in the fields of engineering, water and environmental sciences, from a young age.
There is huge demand for scientists, especially in STEM subjects. Empirical data shows that socially disadvantaged groups and minorities are underrepresented in STEM degree courses. The Education Department at Thomas University in the U.S. State of Georgia has therefore launched the STEMtastic Summer Camp. The support programme offers interested pupils from sixth grade, who are selected annually, an opportunity to attend workshops on topics such as “water systems” or “science of flight” during a summer school. A parallel study examines whether the STEMtastic camp has an influence on the number of new students in STEM courses of study. The project is to continue for 14 years. The Wilo-Foundation is supporting the project over a three-year period, starting in 2015, with the hope to inspire many young people from every section of society and awaken their interest in natural sciences.

Thomas University in the U.S. state of Georgia is a public university and was founded in 1950. With its small number of students (approx. 1,100) and its innovative methods, it provides an excellent learning environment. The university offers 17 bachelor’s and 15 master’s programmes, with a special focus on the fields of business/economics and health.
